As a result of extensive research into how to best improve their delivery productivity, NSW-based Gilders Transport has added two Freighter EziLiner® B-Doubles to its fleet. The Company has significantly increased load and unload speed due the trailer’s award-winning semi-automatic buckleless curtain.
Having won the 2008 Australian International Design Award in the Automotive and Transport category, it’s no surprise that Freighter’s EziLiner curtain-sider has continued to generate plenty of buzz within the road transport equipment market. At the heart of the Eziliner design is the semi-automatic buckleless system that allows drivers to quickly hook and unhook the curtains on the trailer using a single control.
The speed of the EziLiner’s buckleless system caught the eye of Gilders Transport, who knew adding such an innovation would instantly boost the productivity of their interstate fleet.
“Like any customer-driven business, we pride ourselves on providing a service that our clients can be impressed with,” says Brad Gilder, Director of Gilders Transport. “That means meeting our deadlines, pushing our services to new levels and doing so with a product that is reliable and efficient.”
For almost 40 years, the family-owned Gilders Transport has specialised in interstate express and general transport deliveries to warehouses, retail businesses, distribution centres, building sites and depots operating throughout Sydney, Melbourne and Brisbane. Operating daily, Gilders runs a fleet of 60 vehicles, including curtain-sided semi-trailers and B-double combinations while ensuring a safe and efficient loading process.
Recently, Brad oversaw the addition of two Freighter EziLiner B-Doubles, one in straight deck tri-axle configuration and a second in tri-axle double drop deck configuration.
“The fact that a single lever not only hooks and unhooks the curtains, but also provides vertical curtain tension means the EziLiner is easy and so fast to operate,” says Matt Watson from MaxiTRANS NSW, Freighter’s newly established dealership in the state. “That one-touch operation ensures operators can enter and exit their destination up to 15 minutes faster than a conventional curtain-sider with manual buckles.”
“Drivers can also avoid having to open and close buckles and straps one by one, which they tell us can lead to cuts, bruises and repetitive strain injuries,” he says.
Brad agrees. “The single lever operation is just a smart inclusion that makes our daily operation much faster when it comes to loading and unloading,” he says. “All the driver has to do is get down from the cab, push the lever to ‘open’ and the curtains are released and ready to slide open in an instant.”
A short trial convinced Gilders that the EziLiner could boost the Company’s efficiency. “Matt came to me highlighting the benefits of EziLiner’s buckleless curtains and how much it would boost our operation. He outlined the different configurations the system could be built to and even let us use two of their demo trailers just so our drivers could get a feel for how it worked. One week later we were sold,” says Brad.
“The main attraction was the semi-automatic curtain system and the fact we no longer had to manually unhook the buckles.”
In fact, manual buckles had been a source of frustration for Gilders on the Company’s older curtain-siders. “Our mechanics often had to replace them every three months,” Brad claims. “But due to the fact that there are no buckles on the EziLiner, that’s no longer a concern.”
The curtains on Freighter’s EziLiner use a high tensile rope, passing through a series of arcs to provide vertical tension to the curtain. The rope is tensioned by a number of air operated arms, which, after the lever is switched to ‘close’, reach out from the side of the trailer to clutch the rope, pulling it down and inwards to lock into position.
According to Brad, it’ll only be a matter of time before he contacts Freighter again. “There’s no doubt that the EziLiners have made a huge difference to our operation, which is why we are already looking at adding a few more B-doubles to the mix,” he says.
“When the time comes I’ll contact Matt Watson who has really looked after us well since we started purchasing Freighter equipment. If you want a trailer that maximises efficiency, payload and safety, they’re the guys that will make it happen for you.”
